Lesson overview
Students examine how visual art functions as a communicative system for conveying meaning, emotion, and cultural identity across historical and geographical contexts. They analyse how artists use compositional structure, colour theory, and symbolic representation to express ideas, and critically evaluate how artworks both reflect and influence social values.

You'll meet three real artistic movements, analyse a masterpiece with the DEAR method, then split into three research roles - the Historian (art through time and context), the Critic (formal DEAR analysis of a painting), and the Creator (an original artistic response) - before reconvening to discover art hiding in your everyday world.

The lesson ends with your own Art Statement, a class gallery presentation, a collective Wonder Map, and a closing summative test.
