Step 1 - Read & reflect
You receive a message from a school event organiser: "Join our Green Welcome Challenge! Meet us there at half past two. Bring one with you. Are you in?"
One visitor imagines the main entrance. Another imagines the library. Both are guessing.
Pause. What do we know? What is missing? How can we make sure that everyone understands the same message?
Step 2 - Picture the scene
📩🤔
"Meet us there at half past two. Bring one with you."
Guess 1
"Main entrance?"
Guess 2
"Library?"
Pause and picture both readers. Neither guess is stated in the message - both are assumptions.
Step 3 - A quiet pause
No writing, no speaking - just notice what the message actually says and what you have assumed.
Step 4 - Diagnostic poll
Class poll · there is no right or wrong answer at this stage
Which action would you probably try first when a message is unclear?
Choose one - this is a starting-point reflection, not a test.
AGuess from the words I already know.
BAsk the writer a question.
CAsk a digital tool for help.
DLook for more context or an original source.
Step 5 - Personal baseline entry
Private · Saved to your portfolio · 20-300 characters
When a message is unclear, I usually… because…
There is no right answer. This will be compared with your final reflection at the end of the lesson.
🔒 This entry is private - saved to your portfolio as "My Opening Thought - Activity 1".
Thank you. Hold onto that thought - before we search for an answer, let's discover which questions we need.

What happens in Task 1
A 5-minute Phase 1 - Anticipation activity. Three text blocks reveal an unclear invitation, a short visual scene shows two conflicting guesses at its meaning, a brief quiet pause invites reflection, then a 4-option diagnostic poll and a private journal entry (20-300 chars). The Continue button unlocks only after the journal is submitted.
🎯 Learning objectives
Notice the difference between a written detail and an assumption. Recognise that asking for clarification is part of communication. Establish the inquiry question: how can the same message mean different things to different people?
📋 Activity sequence
- Text reveal - three blocks appear with pauses; all remain visible once shown
- Visitor scene - two conflicting guesses, no time limit
- Quiet pause - short breathing animation, skippable
- Diagnostic poll - single choice from 4 statements, all equally valid
- Journal entry - 20-300 chars; private; auto-saves to portfolio
♿ SEN Adaptations
- Voice-to-text input available for the journal entry
- Written labels sit beside the speech bubbles - colour is never the only cue
- Silence timer skippable at any point; no movement around the room is required
- Journal minimum lowered to 5 characters for SEN students
🖨️ No-Tech Format
- Teacher reads the invitation aloud and shows two printed thought bubbles
- One-minute quiet pause, then a show-of-hands or paper poll using the diagnostic options above
- Students write or dictate an Opening Thought card, kept for comparison with Task 7 and the final quiz
