Step 1 - Read & reflect
A visitor is new to your school. "Excuse me, where is the library?"
One helper says, "Turn left." Another says, "Turn right." Both sound sure.
Which way should the visitor go? What would help us give directions that another person can really follow?
Step 2 - Picture the scene

"Excuse me, where is the library?"
Helper 1
"Turn left."
Helper 2
"Turn right."
Pause and picture the visitor. Where are they starting? Which way are they facing?
Step 3 - A quiet pause
No writing, no speaking - just picture the visitor's position. What would help us give directions that another person can really follow?
Step 4 - Diagnostic poll
Class poll · there is no right or wrong answer at this stage
When two people give different directions, what would you probably do first?
Choose one - this is a starting-point reflection, not a test.
AFollow the helper who sounds more confident.
BAsk where to start and which way to face.
CAsk a digital tool for a route.
DLook at a school plan or a labelled sign.
Step 5 - Personal baseline entry

When I need directions in English, I usually… because…
There is no right answer. This will be compared with your final reflection at the end of the lesson.
🔒 This entry is private - saved to your portfolio as "My Opening Thought - Activity 1".
Thank you. Hold onto that thought - before we choose a route, let's discover what the direction words tell us.

What happens in Task 1

A 5-minute Phase 1 - Anticipation activity. Three text blocks reveal the visitor's dilemma, a short visual scene shows two conflicting directions, a brief quiet pause invites reflection, then a 4-option diagnostic poll and a private journal entry (20-300 chars). The Continue button unlocks only after the journal is submitted.

🎯 Learning objectives

Notice that a direction needs a starting point and a shared viewpoint. Recognise polite questions as part of helping someone find a place. Establish the inquiry question: how can English words guide someone to the right room?

📋 Activity sequence

  • Text reveal - three blocks appear with pauses; all remain visible once shown
  • Visitor scene - two conflicting directions, no time limit
  • Quiet pause - short breathing animation, skippable
  • Diagnostic poll - single choice from 4 statements, all equally valid
  • Journal entry - 20-300 chars; private; auto-saves to portfolio
♿ SEN Adaptations
  • Voice-to-text input available for the journal entry
  • Written left/right labels sit beside the speech bubbles - colour is never the only cue
  • Silence timer skippable at any point; no movement around the room is required
  • Journal minimum lowered to 5 characters for SEN students
🖨️ No-Tech Format
  • Teacher reads the visitor dialogue aloud and shows two printed speech bubbles
  • One-minute quiet pause, then a show-of-hands or paper poll using the diagnostic options above
  • Students write or dictate an Opening Thought card, kept for comparison with Task 7 and the final quiz
