🎨 Phase 1 - Anticipation
💬 Discussion
⏱ 7 minutes
Task 1 - What Is Art?
First: feel, then wonder, then question. Only later will we explain anything.
Step 1 - Watch in silence
No talking · no writing · just watch
Flowing colour · a zoom into pixels · a contemporary artwork
Step 2 - 60 seconds of silence
"Now just think… don't speak yet."
60
What did I see? What felt strange? What confused me?
Step 3 - Which statement do you agree with most?
Choose one · don't overthink it
Which statement do you agree with most?
The eye sees everything exactly as it is
Colour depends only on the object
Light changes what we see
Art and screens create colour differently
Interesting… we don't all agree. Hold onto your answer - we'll come back to it.
Step 4 - Personal journal entry
Private · saved to your portfolio · max 150 characters
I think colour (or art) is… because…
Keep it short. Just your idea - there's no right answer.
🔒 This entry is private - only you and your teacher can see it. It becomes your baseline for comparison later in the lesson.
Colour feels immediate and natural, but it is more mysterious than it seems. It begins with light, depends on the eye, and is completed by the brain.
Bridge to Phase 2 - Encounter
"Before we explain the science or the art… stay with this question: do we really see the world as it is - or do our eyes and brain help create it?"
What happens in Task 1
A 7-minute Phase 1 - Anticipation activity. Students watch a silent immersive visual, sit with 60 seconds of quiet thinking, vote intuitively on a wonder-question poll, then complete a private journal entry that becomes their baseline for later comparison. No explanations are given yet - only later does the lesson reveal that colour begins with light, depends on the eye, and is completed by the brain.
🎯 Learning objectives
To awaken curiosity and emotional engagement with colour and art before any content is introduced, and to surface students' prior assumptions and misconceptions as a diagnostic baseline for the teacher.
♿ SEN Adaptations
- Read-aloud available for all on-screen text
- Voice-to-text option for the journal entry
- A breathing-style timer can replace the numeric countdown
- High-contrast display available if needed
🖨️ No-Tech Format
- Teacher describes the visual aloud: "Imagine light breaking into colours…"
- Students think silently, then write their response on paper
- Students whisper their answer to a partner instead of typing it
